Amherst’s Dave Cunningham pens a good piece

for the Amherst’s student newspaper on the value of being a two-sport athlete.  He speaks with some authority on this subject as one of the NESCAC’s finest two-sport athletes. We know him from his stellar performance in net for Amherst this past season (he was a member of the all-NESCAC second team and came ever so close to back stopping his team to a NESCAC championship) but he is also an outstanding baseball player. He is a catcher but has been spending a lot of time playing first base this year. The Amherst baseball team is the defending NESCAC champion and is headed for the four-team NESCAC play-off this coming weekend that will also include Wesleyan, Tufts, and Bates and follows a double elimination format. Wesleyan’s freshman d-man Robby Harbison is also a fine baseball player, with a .375 batting average for the Cardinals, and has helped Wesleyan to a fine 10-2 NESCAC record, which was good enough to nose out 9-3 Amherst for first place in the NESCAC’s west division.
