Nov 27, 2011, schedule and results

OCC and tournament games scheduled for Sunday (a humbling day for several NESCAC teams):

Tufts 3 Becker 0 (3rd place in the Rutland Invitational goes to Tufts; Scott Barchard continues to start every game in net for the Jumbos as he earns this shut out with 35 saves; Evan Story scores 2 goals for Tufts, with the second one being an empty netter late in the 3rd period; d-man Jared Barker is named to the all tournament team; Tufts write up of the game)

Salve Regina 3  Colby 2  (second day of the Bowdoin/Colby Tournament) (UGH for Colby; several regulars missing from the line-up (Jesse Lehman, Tom McGinn, Dan Nelson, and Jackie Bartlett) but nothing in the boxscore like a spectacular performance by the Salve goalie quite explains this loss; Colby tied the game up late in the 3rd (17:31) on a goal by Scott Harff only to have Salve score the game winner 75 seconds later; maybe Colby left too much on the ice its 1-goal loss to the USA Under-18 Team yesterday; Matt Delaney starts the game in net as he has for all Colby games so far; here’s a write up of the game from the Colby website)

Assumption 4  Wesleyan 3 (OT) (double UGH; Wesleyan outshoots Assumption by 41-24; the Cardinals give up the winning goal at the 2:08 mark of OT after a Wesleyan player finds his way to the sin bin; Matt Hadge handles goalkeeping duties for the Cardinals)

Williams 1 Manhattanville 1 (OT)  (amazingly, Williams is the only undefeated team in the NESCAC after just 2 weekends of play and its record is a not particularly impressive 2-0-2; Williams’ lone goal was scored by Nick Anderson in the 2nd period; Ryan Purdy is, as is so often the case, outstanding in net, stopping 41 of the 42 shots he faces, including 5 in the OT session; here’s the write up from the Manhattanville website, written very much from the Valiants’ perspective)

Hobart 3 Amherst 1 (Hobart wins the Cape Cod Tournament; Nathan Corey gets the start in goal for the Jeffs, saving 28 of 31 shots; Johnny Van Siclen scores the lone Jeffs goal; he and Andrew Kurlanski are named to the all-tournament team; crowd for the final is tiny at 154 – the price of overlapping with the Pats game; a few more fans (203) show up for the earlier Babson-Salem third-place game; 784 at the Saturday first-round games – one would think the powers-that-be would try to avoid Sunday afternoon games to the extent possible during football season; here’s a write up of the game put together by Babson)

Hamilton 4 Skidmore 3 (Hamilton takes home the Skidmore Invitational championship; Anthony Scarpino gets the tie-breaker at 18:46 of the 3rd period; another good night for Mike DiMare with 3 assists; Bryan Kelly pots 2 goals; Joe Quattrocchi gets the start in net but is called on to make only 21 saves as it’s a light shooting game (24-21 in favor of Skidmore); here’s Hamilton’s write up of the game)

Wentworth 4 Trinity 3 (Trinity continues its slow start under new head coach Matt Greason, falling to 1-3 on the year; shots are about even at 39-37 in favor of Trinity so we can’t say that Trinity ran into a hot goalie; Wentworth takes control of the game in the 2nd period as it goes up 4-2 on 2 goals within 61 seconds a little past the midway point of the period; Chris Menard continues to play well as he is in on all 3 Bantam goals with a 1-2-3 stat line; Sam Calahan gets the start in net; here’s a write up of the game from the Trinity website)

USA Under-18 Team 2 Bowdoin 1 (Polar Bears pour it on in the 3rd but can’t get the equalizer; PP goal by Bowdoin frosh Danny Palumbo in the 1st is the lone Bowdoin goal; lots to be pleased about if you’re a Bowdoin fan as Steve Messina played very well in net, Polar Bears were perfect on the PK, and Bowdoin played very fast, disciplined hockey in the 3rd; hard to believe this team was tromped by Middlebury the way it was just a week ago; Bowdoin’s write up of the game)
